Hikers in a wooden canoe on Lake Tamblingan with the forested crater rim behind

Highlights

  • Morning views over Lake Buyan and Lake Tamblingan
  • Jungle trail past giant banyan and fig trees
  • Pura Ulun Danu Tamblingan, the temple at the water's edge
  • Traditional wooden canoe across Lake Tamblingan
  • Swim at Banyumala twin waterfall

This is the classic Munduk day out, combining the three things the highlands are known for: forest, lakes and waterfalls. You start high above the twin crater lakes, Buyan and Tamblingan, and follow a jungle trail down through old forest to the water’s edge.

At the bottom of the trail stands Pura Ulun Danu Tamblingan, a small temple right on the lake shore. From there a local fisherman paddles you across the lake in a traditional wooden canoe. The day ends at Banyumala twin waterfall, where two falls drop into a clear pool that is perfect for a swim after the hike.

Along the way Ketut explains the plants villagers use for offerings and medicine, why the lakes are sacred, and how the farming and fishing families around the shore live.

Who is this hike for?

Anyone with moderate fitness who is comfortable walking for a couple of hours on uneven forest paths and taking the steps down to the waterfall. The trail can be muddy after rain, so good shoes matter more than speed.
