Munduk Hiking Packing List: What to Bring for the Twin Lakes and Waterfalls

Hiking in Munduk is different from the beach. The highlands are cooler, the forest trails can be muddy, and some routes pass through temples where you need to cover up. Here’s what to bring so you can enjoy the walk instead of worrying about your feet.

Shoes: the most important thing

Wear shoes with a deep, grippy tread: trail running shoes, light hiking shoes or sturdy sneakers. The forest between Lake Buyan and Lake Tamblingan has roots, mud and steep sections, and the steps down to Munduk’s waterfalls are often wet.

  • No flip-flops or smooth-soled sneakers.
  • Shoes will get muddy. Don’t bring your newest white pair.
  • Spare socks in a plastic bag are a small luxury after the hike.

Clothes

  • Light, quick-dry layers. Cotton stays wet for hours in the humid forest.
  • A light jacket or fleece for the early start. Munduk mornings are fresh.
  • A rain jacket or poncho, all year round.
  • Long, light trousers protect against scratches and leeches on forest trails.

Temple clothes

If your hike visits Pura Ulun Danu Tamblingan or another temple, shoulders and knees should be covered. A sarong and sash are often available to borrow at the temple, but it’s easy to carry your own.

In your daypack

  • Water (at least 1 litre per person)
  • Sunscreen and a hat
  • Insect repellent
  • A small towel and swimwear for the waterfalls
  • Phone in a waterproof pouch or zip bag
  • Cash in small notes for entrance fees, snacks and donations
  • Any personal medication

About leeches

On wet days you may meet a few small leeches in the forest. They’re harmless, just annoying. Long trousers tucked into socks and insect repellent on your shoes and ankles help. Your guide will check the group at rest stops.
