Best Time to Hike the Twin Lakes in Munduk

The short answer: you can hike the Twin Lakes all year, and the best time of day is always the morning. The dry season (roughly April to October) gives the firmest trails, but the wet season has its own rewards: fewer people, greener forest and waterfalls at full power.

Dry season: April to October

These are the most reliable months for hiking around Lake Buyan and Lake Tamblingan. Trails through the forest are firmer, mornings are often clear, and you have the best chance of seeing both lakes from the ridge without cloud.

  • Best for: first-time visitors, families, anyone who wants the easiest walking conditions.
  • Keep in mind: July and August are the busiest months in Bali. The trails around Munduk stay quiet, but book your guide a few days ahead.

Wet season: November to March

Rain in the highlands usually comes as afternoon showers rather than all-day downpours, so mornings are often still good for hiking. The forest is at its greenest and the waterfalls below Munduk are at their most powerful.

  • Best for: travelers who don’t mind some mud in exchange for empty trails.
  • Keep in mind: forest paths get slippery, and there are more leeches on wet days. Good shoes and a light rain jacket make all the difference. Your guide may change the route if a section is unsafe.

The best time of day: early morning

Whatever the month, start early. In the morning the air is cool, the lakes are often still and mirror-like, and mist drifts through the trees. Clouds tend to build over the highlands around midday, and afternoon rain is common, especially in the wet season.

Most hikes with Ketut start between 7:30 and 8:30 for this reason.

How cold is it?

Munduk is in the highlands and much cooler than the coast. Expect fresh mornings and comfortable daytime temperatures for walking. Bring a light layer for the start of the hike; you’ll warm up quickly once you’re on the trail.

Holidays and ceremonies

Balinese temple ceremonies happen throughout the year. If one is taking place at Pura Ulun Danu Tamblingan on your hiking day, you may see villagers in ceremonial dress bringing offerings to the lake. It’s a special sight. Your guide will tell you where visitors can stand and when to stay back.
